History

Important international rail freight routes run through Saxony in the direction of East and South East Europe. These routes are part of the Trans-European transport network TEN-T. In this transport network, already in 2004, the European Commission and the EU member states selected 30 transport projects to be implemented with high priority. One of these priority projects is the TEN-T-Axis 22, which runs as railway line from Dresden and Nuremberg to South East Europe.

In Saxony, the border crossing railway connection through the Elbe Valley is an important part of the EU4SEA-rail corridor. Besides the connection from Dresden to Prague it is also highly important for international transport from and to the North and the Baltic Sea ports.
